D1.1 Visual Inspection Acceptance Criteria

For statically loaded structures, piping porosity shall not exceed 3/8" diameter in any linear inch of weld, and the sum shall not exceed 3/4" in any 12" of weld length. For CJP groove welds in butt joints loaded in tension, no piping porosity is permitted. Per D1.1 Table 8.1.

No. Per D1.1 Table 8.1, cracks are prohibited regardless of size or location, for both statically and cyclically loaded structures. Any crack detected during visual inspection is cause for rejection. This applies to all weld types including groove, fillet, and tack welds.

For statically loaded structures, undercut shall not exceed 1/32" (1 mm) for material less than 1" thick, except that 1/16" is permitted for lengths up to 2" in any 12". For cyclically loaded structures, undercut is limited to 0.01" (0.25 mm) for all thicknesses. Per D1.1 Table 8.1.

Per D1.1 Clause 5.24 and Figure 5.4, fillet welds must have a slightly convex, flat, or slightly concave profile. Excessive convexity is limited based on weld size — for welds 5/16" and under, max convexity is 1/16". The weld face must transition smoothly into the base metal without overlap.

Per D1.1 Clause 8.1.4, visual inspection shall be performed by an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), or an individual qualified under the provisions of Clause 8.1.4.1. The inspector must have adequate visual acuity, documented per AWS B1.0, and experience with the applicable code requirements.
